Each year, AADE also recognizes educators who further the field through innovative uses of media and/or technology. The 2016 award winner is Stephen Ponder, who has found inventive ways to share information about trends in self-care and as he says, “demystify diabetes management while empowering self-care.”
A professor of pediatrics at Baylor Scott & White Healthcare in the division of Pediatric Endocrinology in Temple, TX, he has been living with type 1 diabetes since 1966.
“In 1980, diabetes education and diabetes educators saved my life,” he said. “They turned my life around as I clung to 15 years of outdated self-management—a single dose of Lente insulin.”
Throughout Dr. Ponder’s 20 plus year career as a diabetes-focused pediatric endocrinologist, he has been leveraging his passion for diabetes care and education among children and adolescents, along with their families.
