As you ready your AADE17 schedule with the handy meeting planner and establish your learning goals for the meeting, please place engaging in social media on your list. We’ve got more opportunities than ever at AADE17 for you to try your hand, rather your fingers, at social media, whether you’re a newbie or need a few advanced pointers.

Why, you ask?

The best cut-to-the-chase answer I’ve read recently was from Amy Tenderich, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the website diabetesmine.com in her AADE DOC Spotlight, in AADE in Practice, July 2017.

“It’s important for diabetes educators to be aware that social media is, in a word, unavoidable. It is the new wave of communication between individuals, institutions, companies, and yes – health care providers. Ignoring it is like rejecting phones or TV in the modern world.”

Second Annual Social Media Meet-up – DSMA LIVE

Kick off AADE17 on Thursday evening at the 2nd annual Social Media Meet-up sponsored by Roche Diabetes Care. Join Diabetes Social Media Advocacy (DSMA) founder, Cherise Shockley and her side-kick, Scott Johnson, both people with diabetes. You’ll have a front row seat to see and hear what usually goes on during the DSMA Twitter Chats that occur weekly (only virtually) on Wednesdays at 9 pm ET. But this DSMA LIVE chat is a little different! It features a live panel of diabetes educators and people affected by diabetes as well as AADE attendees and others from around the globe who will join the chat virtually.

Witness first-hand how and why this type of engagement has become a lifeline and support system for people with diabetes. Come. Ask questions. Tweet along using #DSMA and #AADE17 or simply lurk and learn.

Date: Thursday, 8/3
Time: 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Location: Hoosier Hallway – Indianapolis Convention Center

No RSVP is needed. Feel free to drop by as your dance card allows.

Twitter Lounge in Exhibit Hall to Learn and Lounge

With the rising interest among attendees to engage in social media, AADE has, for the first time, set aside a space on the exhibit floor aptly named, the Twitter Lounge. It’s located at Booth 1041. This lounge is supported by the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute, known more familiarly as JJDI or #JJDiabetesInst for the Twitter universe. Follow this hashtag as well at #AADE17.

The Twitter lounge will be open for some much needed R&R (rest and relaxation) during the exhibit hours. But most importantly, I will lead three brief, informal Twitter how-to session at different levels of acumen on behalf of JJDI  during the exhibit hours. See the schedule below. Come by to lounge and learn. I look forward to seeing you there!
